Excerpt: Chapter 5 The Wakeup Call A CEO, better known as the Chief Executive Officer of a company oversees the daily functions of the business. He or she is likened to a president, executive or managing director. The CEO is responsible for the overall success of the entire organization. They have the ultimate authority to make final decisions. Until you make yourself the CEO or Child Executive Officer, you will have a hard time trying to raise your children. As you know, the CEO has a large burden to ensure success. Can you imagine for a moment what would happen if the CEO of Apple, Facebook or Wal-Mart just let their employees show up for work whenever they wanted to? Or if they let them decide what assignments they wanted to do? You know as well as I do that those actions would produce sheer chaos.

For the same reasons, we have laws. It creates discipline so that things are done in order. Imagine for a moment that there were no red, yellow or green lights. There would be total mayhem.


The great thing about being a CEO is that everyone knows you are the “Top Dog.’’ In the meeting rooms, when the CEO enters, it seems as though everyone sits up a little straighter. Everyone seems to be more in tune. And some, when the meeting opens up for questions, will want to ask some of the most ridiculous questions sometimes just to let it be known that they asked a question. So, you see, the CEO already has a reputation that precedes him or her. He or she already has the respect of the group. In most cases, the CEO has plenty of power. People under the CEO have their role, but the CEO is at the helm. No one does much without the approval of the CEO. Any CEO has a large responsibility to make sure every part of that business runs efficiently and that there is productivity.


Most CEO’s have a vision and a plan to ensure the vision is fulfilled. I believe it is much the same way when it comes to raising children. You have to have a vision for them and a plan, and you have to make room for adjustments. My mother would tell me that I have to see my children’s behavior as if they were adults having that same behavior, and if I didn’t like what I saw, I needed to help them change it, or the behavior would manifest as an adult.


I must have woken up one morning and saw that the business I was CEO over was being operated by two little miniature self- appointed CEOs! This is exactly what happens when you’re focused on other things and not maintaining control of your business.
